Term 1 is half way through and Year 1 and 2 have done lots of negotiating and debating through dramatic play. The children had some difficult tasks put before them, like how to convince a witch in disguise to let them in to her house. They also spent time map making in preparation for journeys they needed to undertake. In Year 2 the children worked as woodcutters and farmers as part of a drama about a fictional village, in family groups they held meeting about whether to accept new people to the village. They have all done a great job considering outcomes and presenting ideas.
This week in maths Year 2 have been investigating measurement and angles.
Both classes made right angle finders out of card and split pins and then they went on a hunt to find some!
Mr St George's class spotted lots of right angles in his classroom. Miss Hindley's maths group explored in the classroom and in the play ground!
The children were very enthusiastic to find as many objects and playground equipment that had right angles.
They now have a great understanding of what right angles look like and can apply them to making quarter turns.
To start our new topic of "Chocolate" Year 2 had a tasting afternoon. They were answering the question "Which flavour combination do Year 2 like the best?"
The children worked together to chop up all the ingredients that they were going to try. Then they waited patiently for their first chocolate taste. The combinations to choose from were chocolate with; strawberry, banana, orange, caramel or nutella.
This half term Year 2 have been studying Space. As part of this topic, Year 2 Red have looked at artwork by Van Gogh and his 'Starry NIght' painting.
The children began by studying the style of Van Gogh and looked at how he created texture in his work. Over the following few weeks they drew their outline of their version of 'Starry Night' and painted the sky, then the hills and finally the builidngs in the town. To add detail and texture to their painting the children added swirls and dashes with pastels.
Last week Year 2 went on a trip. First we split into groups. We went on the bus at 9.30. The bus driver stopped at the end of the road and we walked to the Bibliotheca. After that we ate our lunch. Then we went to the toilet. We watched an amazing movie about space on a special screen that is like a big sphere. We felt like we were moving!
We saw Tutankhamun. Finally we went back to school and played in the garden.

This term, Year 2 are learning about Space. We came up with a lot of interesting questions that we wanted to investigate and we are slowly working our way through these in our science lessons. One thing that interested many of us was the rings of Saturn. We did some research and found out that the rings are actually billions of pieces of ice orbiting the planet. We used plastercine and sugar or salt to make a model to show this.
On Tuesday 3rd December, we went on a trip to the fire station. First we climbed on the old fire truck. Next, everyone rang the truck’s bell then we met the fire fighters. They were wearing helmets and boots. Later the fire instructor talked about fire safety. Then we went to the garden and ate our lunch there. Finally the whole class took a picture in front of the fire truck. We had a very nice day at the fire station.”
