COBIS Global Debating Competition

Thu, 23/02/2017 - 16:23 -- Lydia Makram
Five of the BSA students recently participated in the prestigious COBIS Global Debating competition. This year’s competition took place in Marbella, Spain. Over the two days of intense debating, students delivered eloquent speeches on motions including:

'This House Believes in an era of post-truth politics governance derived from popular elections is fundamentally flawed.'
'This House Believes that individuals with self-inflicted injuries should forfeit the right to indiscriminate access to universal healthcare.' and
'This House Believes that colonial nations should pay reparations for slavery.'

Advantage was taken of cultural trips to Marbella town, and the historic Alhambra fortress, Granada - a bastion of classic Islamic architecture from the 13th Century Moorish conquests of Southern Spain. It was also a great opportunity to get to know students from around the world, as competing schools came from across Europe, the Middle East and South America. Well done to the BSA debating team, who impressed judges with their feist and flair, and were only knocked out of the competition by the deserving finalists from Dubai. Special mention goes to Nadia Bitar, who earned the accolade of being singled out by the judges in the Showcase final.

Thank you to our very supportive and understanding team parents, including the heroes' welcome we received at the airport.
Inspired to compete again in Dubai next year and re-energised, our talented debating team will surely go from strength to strength!
