Upper School (Years 10 & 11)
During Year 9 students are guided in their selection of GCSEs and IGCSEs that they will study in Years 10 and 11. These examination courses demand high levels of personal organisation, commitment to study and perseverance. The majority of examination courses are studied over two years (as they are in similar schools in England) and are examined at the end of Year 11. Students study seven compulsory subjects (Arabic, Biology, Chemistry, English Language, English Literature, Maths and Physics) and three optional subjects, chosen from Art, Business Studies, Computing, French, Geography, German and History. Mock examinations in early January of Year 11 help confirm students’ progress and predicted grades so that they can focus on doing even better in their final examinations. Expectations are very high and students develop excellent study skills that are very well supported by frequent revision coaching and opportunities for tutorials with teachers.
During the Spring Term of Year 11 students may apply for further study in the Sixth Form. Sixth Formers have a high degree of autonomy in the school and only those with the maturity and higher order study skills are selected. Teaching groups are small so that learning is personalised to support students in making outstanding progress. Students usually select four AS levels in subjects in which they will achieve at least grade B at GCSE/IGCSE. Examinations for AS level are taken at the end of Year 12. Those students who wish to go on to do A2 level will continue into Year 13 and final examinations will be taken at the end of the year.
Sixth Form (Years 12 & 13)
At The British School, Alexandria we aim for all our Year 11 students to move into the Sixth Form. The Sixth Form differs from the Lower School in that the students are afforded a level of autonomy and independence that supports their development into undergraduates. Our students study AS and A levels from the leading examination boards in England.
The British School’s Sixth Form has developed into a very personal learning opportunity for post-16 study for students looking to attend university in either Egypt or abroad. Class sizes are small, the tuition is personal and the opportunity for students to learn through understanding is excellent.
The Sixth Form students have more freedom to choose when they study as they have a timetable that includes study periods. With that freedom is an expectation that they will be self-motivated and increasingly independent in developing a sense of their own direction in life.
The Sixth Formers develop a different relationship with their teachers as they are asked to take on responsibilities and to offer leadership in community activities for raising money, sports activities, arts activities and to also do a small amount of supervision of the younger pupils.
All Sixth Formers will undertake a programme of Citizenship tailored to the unique needs of young people growing up in Egypt at this time. This work covers a wide range of topics from entrance into university and organising life there, to investigating matters of personal health and well-being. Students are challenged to reflect on important issues in the immediate – and not so immediate – world around them. Sixth Formers can also take part in a range of sports programmes and the various weekly voluntary activities run at the School, including work with other year groups in support of learning. In addition, British School Sixth Formers are able to lead an ECA and undertake roles of responsibility in the various activities that take place each week. Sixth Formers will be elected to the posts of Student President and Vice President, which means that as students enter the senior stage of their school careers they take a leading role in establishing the good running and positive atmosphere of the school community. The Student President and Vice President will work with the school’s Senior Management Team to organise Y12 Senior Prefects and Y11 Prefects.
The curriculum is based on AS and A2 level programmes and aims to give our students all that they need to enter universities in England. There is a high degree of independence offered reflecting the maturity of the students. In return they provide leadership and act as role models for the whole school. The Sixth Form curriculum has been designed to provide a broad and flexible choice of subjects and courses which include: AS/A2 levels; Advanced Vocational / BTEC courses; and GCSEs including: English literature, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, computing, art and design, music, business studies, history and geography.

IGCSE / GCSE / AS and A level Courses – requests for course changes
The process for changing a course is as follows:
- A student that seeks to change courses can not simply inform the Student Services Officer and immediately stop attending classes. The school will not approve course changes in this way. The timetable and supervision implications alone demand a much more careful approach.
- The consistent policy for at least the past 14 months is that students may only change courses after a meeting with the teacher and then you must arrange please, a separate meeting between yourself, myself and the teacher. This is because I would like you to be fully aware of the implications in terms of timetable and final qualifications to guide you and your child student as best we can.
- Students who have not spoken with their teacher or had a parent meeting with me are in fact, still taking the course and must attend all lessons. Year 10, 11 and Sixth Form tutors will monitor attendance and follow-up as necessary.
- Finally, a reminder that to be eligible under British Council regulations to take an examination student must have an 85% or better attendance in each examination course during the period of study. If a student does not have an 85% or better attendance record the school will be unable to enter them of the examination.
