New Era for the British School of Alexandria

Governors announce new leadership appointments, in addition to increased investment in teaching and learning.


4 July 2011, Alexandria (Egypt): The Board of Governors of the British School of Alexandria announced today the appointment of a new Principal/CEO and a new Vice Principal/Head of Primary of the School. The appointments are part of a series of actions initiated by the Governors aimed at positioning the British School as the leading international education provider in the region.

Gillian Greenwood, an experienced leader in the international education sector, has been appointed in the role of Principal and CEO of the School. During the past year, Gillian has been working for Nord Anglia Education a Leadership Advisor in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates, as part of a public-private partnership to introduce the new Abu Dhabi Education Council (APEC) curriculum. Gillian Greenwood’s previous career include posts as Principal and Head of combined Early Years, Primary and Secondary Schools, both public and private, in the United Kingdom and internationally.

The newly appointed Vice Principal and Head of Primary School is Alastair Hutt, a rising leader in the education field who brings a fresh approach from the independent preparatory education sector. Since 2009, Alastair has been Deputy Headmaster of The Buchar School on the Isle of Man, which is the preparatory school to King William’s College . Prior to that Alastair has held senior leadership posts at a range of independent preparatory and state schools, including the renowned Windlesham Prep School, West Sussex and Moulsford Prep School, Oxfordshire.

Paul Walton, elected Chair of the Board of Governors of the British School, said of the new appointments: “Gillian and Alastair bring important leadership qualities to the School respectively, combining international management and leadership experience with a strong understanding of the best of a British independent preparatory education,” adding that: “We are in a time of change in Alexandria, Egypt and the region at large, and the British School is well-positioned to contribute to the transition process through the delivery of high quality education and active citizenship learning.”

The leadership recruitment process was led by the Governors with the support of Anthony Millard Consulting (AMC), internationally renowned as a provider of recruitment for UK independent schools. In addition to the new Principal/CEO and Head of Primary/Vice Principal, the Governors are in the process of appointing the School’s very first ‘Business Manager and Bursar’ to provide leadership to the financial, commercial and business dimension of the School.

The Governors also announced this week new levels of investment in the professional support for staff of the British School, including a teacher training programme to be launched on 21st August in preparation of the new academic year which begins officially on the 4th September 2011.

The British School of Alexandria (BSA), located in the Roushdy district of Alexandria, was established in 1984 in the grounds of the British Consulate. Over the past 27 years it has expanded onto two further sites and now educates 262 students from 24 different countries. The School aims to offer the highest quality of British-style education to the local and expatriate communities.
